ASU plays NAU for their first game of the season in front of largest crowd so far this year

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

September 30th was a special day for ASU Rugby as they hosted NAU in their pre-season opener.

Northern Arizona traveled to Tempe for their 2nd game of the season. These clubs are both in the rebuilding stages but both have promising futures.

The game took place at one of the best rugby fields in Arizona, the ASU multipurpose fields. Not many teams have the luxury to play on such soft and perfectly manicured grass fields in the hot desert. The players on both sides took full advantage of the facility and entertained the crowd with great tackles, vicious ruck contacts and an all-around fast-paced game.

The combination of location, great weather and the promise of a good spectacle drew about the largest crowd that I have ever seen at a local pre-season game. Parents, friends, local men's rugby clubs, women's rugby clubs, youth rugby clubs and even the GCU rugby club were all there partying and getting loud for a great Friday night of rugby. It was a great event to be part of. Something tells me rugby games like this one will only get bigger, better and more popular.

We were there. We had a great time with our new best friends and we have the pictures to prove it.
