Rugby is Back – ASU, GCU, and UTEP Kick Off the Season with a 7s Tournament

ter a long, hot Arizona summer, rugby is back – and in the best way possible.

Saturday night, ASU, GCU, and UTEP came together for a spirited 7s tournament that not only got the wheels turning but also entertained fans with high-quality, fast-paced rugby. While the competition was fierce, the event carried a party-like atmosphere. Coaches and players alike embraced camaraderie, fair play, and community, reminding everyone why rugby is such a unique sport.

ASU once again showed the results of a strong summer recruiting effort, bringing out great numbers and loads of raw individual talent. Led by veterans Pierce McNamara, Austin Wilcox, and Jacob Hurl, the Sun Devils looked sharp. Among the new recruits, Brady Cochran – a former local youth player – made his presence felt with powerful runs on offense and a relentless work rate on defense.

“It’s good to have young freshmen come in with a solid rugby base – it helps us get better quickly,” said veteran Austin Wilcox.

The team displayed flashes of brilliance that head coach Pieter Hugo will be able to build upon for what promises to be another entertaining ASU rugby season.

UTEP Miners

Traveling all the way from El Paso, Texas, the UTEP Miners brought a strong, physical side to the event. Their hard-running ball carriers kept the local defenses busy and, at times, broke through for long, crowd-pleasing scores – including several 40+ meter tries that had the sidelines roaring.

And then there was GCU – and they came to party. The sidelines were a sea of white and purple as the Lopes “test-drove” this year’s recruits. Known for their typically business-like approach to competition, GCU flipped the script, laughing, smiling, and even breaking out sideline dance moves.

On the field, they were clinical and dominant, putting on a rugby clinic while keeping the atmosphere light and enjoyable. Makas’ powerful runs, Danny Sanchez’s hat trick, and Sefa’s quick feet that left defenders flat-footed were among the night’s highlights.

For GCU, this was the perfect tune-up ahead of a challenging schedule, and they used the night to both bond as a team and showcase their talent.

A Perfect Curtain-Raiser

Arizona rugby could not have asked for a better way to open the 2025-2026 season. These young athletes reminded everyone that rugby is at its best when it’s about friendship, fair play, and fun.

This year promises to be another season of growth and development for rugby across the state. If Saturday was any indication, Arizona fans can look forward to plenty of great rugby, lots of smiles, and unforgettable moments.

Rugby: the best time you’ll have with your new best friends.
